Happy Birthday, Kai!
This morning we celebrated Kai's birthday!

Music with Ms. Hayward

After music, students started to practice for the Christmas concert. Students are learning to do the actions for the song as well as memorize the lyrics to the song Jingle Bells.

Phonics
Students are starting to review long and short vowel sounds. Today we focused on the long and short sound for the letter Aa.
We brainstormed words that have the short and long sound

After, students worked in literacy stations and practiced writing, reading and creating words and letters out of playdough.

Math: We are continuing learning about graphs and how to sort objects based on their attributes.
Students looked at a picture in the Big math book and came up with ways on how to sort the animals in the picture.

Some students suggested we group the animals based on their color. Some said we should organize them based on how many legs they have.

After, students were placed into groups and had to guess what my sorting rule was.

After, students discovered tally marks and how to make them. Students know that tally marks help us count objects.

We did tally graphs together as a class. After, students worked in their workbooks and created tally graphs based on if people have pets. Students went around the classroom and asked their peers if they have a pet at home.

We counted how many boys/girls there are in the class.

After, students did their own tally graphs in their workbook.

After, students wanted to find out what pet is the most favorite (dog or cat)

Devan brought in a bouncy ball for the letter B

After, students worked in their journals and made a list of words they learned this week.

Math
Data Management

We continued learning about picture graphs. Students are learning how to analyze graphs and describe what each graph is telling us. Students are enjoying collecting data and recording their findings

We took a vote to see what is the most favorite ice cream flavor.

After, students worked in their workbooks and looked at a graph and were asked to describe the graph.

Unit of inquiry: Sensational Senses

Today we explored our sense of hearing further, students listened to different types of sounds while having their eyes closed. We recorded answers of what they think the sound is and then students voted.

After, I told students what each sound was. Students were surprised to find out what the sound actually was.
The first sound students listened to was a lawn mower.
This is what students guessed

After, students made a list of words and pictures of things they hear outside.

Morning Reading Buddies

Students in Ms. Hung's grade 4 class read to the students this morning.

Science
Today we started our science fair project. Students brainstormed a list of items of what they think we need to make vanilla ice cream.

I told students that we will be making ice cream 3 different times with changing ingredients.

I listed all of the ingredients needed to make vanilla ice cream into 3 categories.
In the first group: ice cubes, cream, milk, sugar, vanilla and salt.
Second: ice cubes, cream, sugar, vanilla and salt.
Third: ice cubes, water, cream, sugar, vanilla and salt.

Students came up with a hypothesis, they think that to make good ice cream, we need the ingredients in the first group. We even took a survey.

After, we made ice cream 3 different times in order to see which group of ingredients supports the hypothesis.

Making Ice cream part 1:
Ingredients: Milk, cream, vanilla extract, sugar, salt and ice cubes.

After, we started to shake the bag.

At the same time, we began to make ice cream using the same ingredients except without adding milk..

While we were shaking the 2 bags, students noticed that the bag without milk was not as thick.

We started to make the third ice cream

Students observed the 3 bags and noticed that the 2 other bags containing the different ingredients did not make good ice cream as it did not get thick.

Students mentioned that the reason why the other 2 bags did not get thick was because we didn't add any milk.

Students were excited to see that our hypothesis was right! In order to make good ice cream we need the following ingredients: milk, cream, sugar, salt, ice cubes and vanilla extract.

We continued to shake the bag and eventually our ice cream was ready!
We went to the cafeteria to enjoy some yummy vanilla ice cream!

Students used their senses throughout the experiment to smell, touch, and taste ice cream!

Math: Data Management
Students continued to learn about picture graphs.
Students worked in their workbook and went around the room to and asked their peers in order to find out what their favorite vegetable is.

After, we came back to the carpet and students shared their findings with the class.

Phonics
We continued learning about the sound/letter Bb.
Students worked on a letter Bb worksheet.
