Fire alarm

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),

This email is to inform you that we experienced an unexpected fire alarm this morning in the building. SJA staff did an amazing job evacuating the students safely and in a timely fashion from the building. Students were outside for ten minutes waiting in line while we followed proper protocol to ensure every child was accounted for. At this time, we then made our way over to Meadowvale rinks to have shelter from the cold. Once the fire department gave the go ahead we returned back to the building. There is no need for alarm or concern the building and students are safe and secure.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me, Mrs. Smith at bsmith@stjudesacademy.com or Mrs. Hocevar at hhocevar@stjudesacademy.com.

Morning Routine

Aarna is our new Calendar helper this week!

Journal: Students wrote about what they did on the weekend

Phonics: "ai" sound

Students brainstormed words that have the "ai" sound.
After, students created the two letters using play dough

Math: Subtraction

Today, students were introduced to subtraction. Students know that when we subtract a number that means we are taking away.

Students learned a few strategies to help them subtract. (i.e. using fingers, drawing counters, using blocks or counters).

Students worked with a partner and asked each other to solve a math problem. Each student took turns and asked their partner a math question, the other student had to solve the answer using their fingers.

After, students worked on a worksheet

Unit of Inquiry: Community Helpers

Today, we continued learning about community helpers. We talked about what mail carriers, fire fighters and a vets do to help people.

Students looked through various books about different community helpers (i.e. nurse, doctor, construction worker, pilot, garbage collector etc.)

Students worked in pairs and were assigned a book about a specific community helper. Students had to act out as if they are the community helper and the rest of the class had to guess what type of community helper they were.

Syra and Surina were pretending to be mail carriers, they handed out "packages" to their peers.

Kai and Devan were fire fighters, they pretended to put out a fire!

Kaysha and Aarna were pretending to be garbage collectors by cleaning up garbage!
