Thursday, October 5th


Phonics: Friday show & share!
After our morning calendar routine, Aarna, Syra, Victoria and Kaysha did show & share:

Aarna brought in a Kettle for the letter K
Syra brought in her calendar for the letter C!
Victoria brought in a hello Kitty doll for the letter K

Kaysha brought in a Koala for the letter K




Journal: Today students wrote about words that start with the letters C and K in their journals. Students copied the prompt on the board, "Words that start with the letters c and k are..." and then they listed words on their own.





After journals, we talked about thanksgiving and what we are thankful for. Students wrote down what they are thankful for and drew a picture.





Math: We continued learning about ordinal numbers. Students were given a number, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. And then they were asked to line up according the number they were given.
Students completed an ordinal number worksheet where they had to colour in objects accordingly.

Unit of Inquiry: Students continued and completed their food worksheet.


International day: 

Students were excited to share their information with the other SJA students and parents. I brought in fried Halloum cheese that the students, teachers and other students enjoyed!
Students walked around the auditorium and looked at other countries and sampled some food/drink.

Wednesday, October 4th

Phonics: Today we learned the sound, action, and song for letter K. We brainstormed words that start with the letter K. Check out the words the SK students came up with..

After brainstorming, students were paired up and were given 2 flash cards with words that start with the letters of the week that we have learned so far.
The first student sounded out the word to their partner, and then together they came up with a sentence using that word.

Check out the sentences the students came up with....

"I can jump"

"I was sick at home"



"we pick apples"


"I pin my clothes" 



"I sat on the ground"


"A cat is an animal"




Math: Today in math we learned about ordinal numbers: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th,6th,7th,8th,9th and 10th.

6 hearts were on the board. Students were asked to come up and colour in the hearts accordingly...
"colour in the 3rd heart blue"
"colour in the 6th heart blue"
"colour in the 4th heart red"


Students were placed in a line, students were asked to go in the line according to what place I put them in. Students knew that the 1st person was number 1, second was 2 and third was 3 etc. 


After our exercise, students worked on a ordinal number worksheet where they had to follow instructions and colour in the images accordingly.

Unit of Inquiry: Today students began to work on the final projects. On a worksheet, students wrote about the food item they picked yesterday. Students worked hard on sounding out the words. 
Tomorrow will be the last day to complete the written part of their project.

Tuesday, October 3rd



Journal: After our morning routine, students worked in their journals and wrote about what they did on the weekend. Students copied the prompt on the board "On the weekend I..." and wrote about what they did on the weekend by sounding out letters and writing what they did on their own.


Math: Today we continued counting by 5's. Students really enjoy the count by 5's song by Jack Hartmann on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amxVL9KUmq8

After listening to the song, we counted by 5's using our hand and counted all the way up to 100!

After our large group activity, students worked individually and completed a count by 5's worksheet.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students were introduced to their final projects. We reviewed all the different parts of a plant and how food items can come from the root/seed/stem/leaves/fruit part of a plant.
We wrote down all the different types of fruits/vegetable items that grow on plants: strawberry, potato, broccoli, cabbage, celery, carrot, asparagus, corn, and apples.
Students picked a food item from a basket and they were assigned their food item for their project.

 

After students were assigned their food item, we discussed what they will be doing for their final project.
Tomorrow, students will be writing about the food item they picked. Final project will be due next week. (a letter regarding the final task was sent home)

Monday, October 2nd


Morning: Today we had reading buddies! Grade 4 students came to our class and read to the students.

Kai is our new calendar helper for the week!

Our weather reporter, Victoria helping us with the weather this week.

Farah, our plant feeder this week.

Today we learned our new letter for the week, C! Students learned the sound, action and song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dhzPuT6jm0
for the letter c and brainstormed a list of words that start with the letter C

Math: Today we learned how to count by 5's. We played an activity as a group by holding up our hand and we counted by 5's.
we watched a cool video by jack hartmann and learned a new counting by 5 song:

Students worked individually on a counting by 5 worksheet where they had to fill in the blanks and use their hand to count to 5 to figure out what the missing number was.

Unit Of Inquiry: Students reviewed the parts of a plant and after we created our own flower using a baking cup, pipe cleaner and paper.

After, we talked about international day. Students shared some of the information they researched at home. Some students shared the different foods they eat in Cyprus, as well as the types of clothing they wear and even the types of food they export to other countries!
Students are excited for international day on Thursday.
