Morning Routine

Kai is our plant feeder this week.

Phonics: Letter/sound Jj

Students watched bounce patrol and discovered new words that start with J. After, students worked with a partner and brainstormed a couple of words and presented them to the class.

Journal

Today, students wrote about what Doctors do.

Math: Subtraction.

Students built and recorded subtraction stories in horizontal form.

Students also used dominos to subtract/add.

Unit of Inquiry: Community Helpers

Students continued to explore the role of a Doctor/nurse

Students coloured doctor coats.

After, students explored the different tools Doctors use (syringe, mask, tongue depressor, prescription form) 

Students role played and pretended to be doctors/patients and used the props and even filled out a prescription form!

Making Musical Instruments

MAKING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS!

To end our Musical Instruments unit we will
be making our very own instruments!

·             I am asking that each student think about what sort of instrument s/he would like to make and bring in some materials from home to make it.

·             Students will think about how their instrument make sound (i.e. will they hit it, shake it, use air, use strings, etc.)

·             Students will bring in things they would like to use to make their own instrument (e.g. great materials include cans, boxes, containers with lids, bathroom tissue/paper towel/wrapping paper tubes, plastic combs and waxed paper, elastic bands, etc.)  Extra materials for students to share are also always welcome.

·             I will provide some items students can select to put in their instruments to make sound (e.g. rice, dried beans) but students are welcome to bring in items from home if they wish (e.g. coins, stones, metal washers, etc.)

·             Students are also invited to bring in odds and ends that they might like to use (and/or share) to decorate their instruments (e.g. ribbons, stickers, glitter glue, pom-poms, washi tape, etc.).  I will also provide some materials including markers, glue, and construction paper.

The instruments will be assessed as follows:

·             Explains choice of materials and how they make sound

·             Identifying which Musical Instrument Family (i.e. Percussion, Wind, Brass, Strings) their instrument would belong to according to how the sound is made.

·             Demonstrates playing different dynamics (i.e. volume)

·             Demonstrates playing different tempos (ie. speed)

·             Construction of Instrument

Please label the bag/container items are brought in in so we know what belongs to who.
Please indicate if any of the materials are for sharing with others in their class.
We will be making our instruments on January 18^th

100th Day of School

Dear SK Families,

We will celebrate our 100th day of school on Tuesday, February 13. 

We have planned a fun day where the children will experience 100 through many different activities.  To help us visualize what 100 objects look like, we are asking that each child decorate a plain t-shirt with 100 items on it. Due to the cold weather conditions we ask that all children wear a long sleeved shirt under their t-shirt so they are morecomfortable.  Some ideas to use as decorations are stickers, googlyeyes, fabric paint, cotton balls, buttons, pom-poms, safety pins, stamps, etc. The lighter weight the item, the easier it is to glue, stick, or attach 100 things to the shirt. Please also remember that your child will be wearing the 100 things all day (it will get very uncomfortable to wear 100 heavy things like pennies or crayons on a t-shirt.) Fabric paint is an excellent decoration because it is lightweight and doesn’t fall off. Have fun creating any shirt that you would like with 100 items on it.  Please have your child wear their shirt on Tuesday, February 13 as we celebrate the 100th day of school!  

This year each SK class will have a fashion show in our class to model our 100 collections. Attached to this note you will find a card. Please complete the sentences describing your child’s t-shirt and return the card to school on our 100th day. During the fashion show, your child’s teacher will read the card while your child models his/her creation!

Tuesday, January 16th

Reading Buddies

This morning, students from Ms. Hung's grade. 4 class came to read to the students

Music

After reading buddies, students had Music with Ms. Hayward

Phonics

Students continued exploring the "ai" sound. We spelled words that have "ai" in them (i.e. train, snail, mail, trail, fail etc.)

After, students spelled words on their own using a letter word bank.

Math: Subtraction

Students are continuing to learn how to subtract using their hands and other manipulatives.

Unit of Inquiry: Community Helpers

Today we read about all of the important things a Doctor does. Students discovered that a Doctor uses different tools, helps patients and provides them with medicine. (stethoscope, surgery, prescription, pharmacists etc.)

Patient Surina went to the pharmacy to get her prescription from the pharmacist (Syra).

After, students coloured and cut different pictures that go inside a Doctors work bag.
